Sovereign Wealth Funds: Institutional Trust in India's Development
Powered by Froala Editor
Sovereign Wealth Fund investments have doubled as compared to previous years, rising from around ₹15,446 crore in FY2022–23 to ₹47,604 crore in FY2023–24,which shows an impressive level of confidence in India's economic potential. These state-owned investment vehicles view India as a strategic market with growth potential and benefits for diversifying portfolios.
India has its own sovereign wealth fund! Did you know that? A staggering $4.9 billion in assets are managed by the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF)!
But NIIF is a growth accelerator, not just a data collection tool. By channelling investment into India’s infrastructure and other high-growth sectors, it helps bring global capital to our doorstep. For investors in AIFs, this means an added layer of stability and credibility, making the ecosystem more attractive and reliable than ever.

The UHNI Wealth Explosion: Demographics Driving Demand

India currently has around 13,000 Ultra HNIs in India with assets exceeding $30 million each, and it ranks among the top three countries globally for billionaire population. This wealth creation is supported by entrepreneurship, technology innovation, and the increasing economic expansion happening in the country over the last decade.
Interestingly, around 20% of such individuals are under the age of 40, which makes them great candidates for exploring alternative investment funds.
The UHNIs' population in India has increased significantly over the last decade, going from ~7,000 in 2016 and projected to reach ~19,000 by 2028, indicating the expanding wealth base of the investors.
These UHNIs, along with their forward-looking outlook and higher risk appetite, are actively moving beyond traditional investments, which is driving the rising demand for AIF in India and long-term wealth preservation strategies.

Regulatory Framework: Building Investor Confidence

The SEBI has introduced relaxed regulatory reforms that are attracting both UHNIs and sovereign wealth funds. In February 2025, SEBI allowed category II AIFs to invest more than 50% of their investable capital in listed debt securities with a credit rating of A or below, thus allowing more flexibility in strategies. These reforms thus demonstrate increased confidence from SEBI in AIFs.
The introduction of a Co-investment vehicle (CIV) under AIF in India allows SWFs and UHNIs to invest directly in specific unlisted companies alongside the AIF. This enables greater exposure of companies that these individuals can take advantage of. The CIV framework includes mandatory documentation, separate accounts, and other regulations that help investors understand fund compliance, risk, and transparency before committing their capital. This clarity allows UHNIs to deploy their wealth with greater confidence and trust in the market.

Over the past five years, commitments and investments to alternative investment funds have increased at an exponential rate. AIF commitments have increased by more than 400%, from ₹2.82 trillion in FY19 to ₹14.2 trillion by June 2025. Over the same time frame, ₹6 trillion in investments were deployed. By March 2025, HNIs alone had invested ₹5.38 trillion, a 32% year-over-year increase, highlighting the importance of SWF and UHNIs as major capital providers.
Alongside this, there is also growing interest in NRI investment in India, where non-resident Indians are increasingly deploying capital into alternative investment funds for diversification, tax efficiency, and sustainable wealth preservation.
As the Indian economy continues to grow and expand, the symbiotic relationship between the investors and AIFs seems to deepen. The projected 50% growth in UHNIs by 2028 and continued sovereign interest in Indian investments will lead to the expansion of AIFs in Indian capital markets.
Driven by the strong combination of ultra-high net worth investment demand and sovereign institutional capital, the future of India's AIF sector looks exceptionally bright.
India’s AIF growth story is being powered by the perfect blend of forward-looking UHNIs and globally trusted wealth funds. With supportive regulations and increasing investor confidence, the alternative investment ecosystem is set for a promising future.
